How to Make Easy Portuguese Chicken Mozambique

While the complete recipe details are available below, here are some tips to make this delicious Portuguese chicken recipe.

  • First, we will prepare our chicken. We will use a cut of white meat chicken such as boneless skinless chicken breasts. Cut the chicken into cubes and season lightly with salt and pepper. Set a large frying pan over medium heat and add your olive oil and tablespoons of butter. Melt butter and olive oil together, and place chicken in the frying pan to sear it. Once the chicken is cooked through, remove from the frying pan and reduce the heat to medium-low.
  • Now we will make our sauce! Add a diced medium onion and crushed garlic cloves to the pan and sauté onions and garlic. until they are softened and fragrant. Bring the heat back up to medium-high heat and add a teaspoon lemon juice and then pour half of a beer into the pan to deglaze the pan. You could also use dry white wine in place of the beer. Add chicken broth and two packets of Sazon Goya con Azafran seasoning to your sauce. Stir it all together and let it bubble. Once the sauce starts to reduce, stir in piri piri sauce and a little bit of crushed red pepper flakes. Add your chicken back to the sauce and let it cook while the sauce continues to reduce.

Serve on a serving platter in the sauce and topped with chopped fresh parsley or chopped cilantro. Add lemon quarters on the side for serving. This dish is also even better the next day! Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to three to five days. The Mozambique sauce gets absorbed by the chicken and rice to make the flavors even better for leftovers!
