Making the perfect summer cocktail requires the perfectly flavored alcohols. Use this method for gin and vodka infusions to create great patio cocktails!

gin and vodka infusions

I love to sip cocktails on my patio during summertime, and often those cocktails include a flavored vodka or gin.  However I find it is unclear what the large distillers use to create these intense flavors in these packaged gin and vodka varieties.  I have noticed that many use a lot of chemicals to achieve this.  As a result, I decided to infuse my own flavors into gin and vodka for my next patio happy hour.  This way, I can still enjoy my favorite flavors and have the satisfaction of knowing that the flavors are all natural!

Key Factors When Creating Gin and Vodka Infusions

I have provided full detailed instructions below.  However I am outlining some important things for you to consider when making your own alcoholic infusions here:

  • Alcohol: this is obviously the key ingredient for this recipe.  Since we are infusing the alcohol , I recommend opting for a cheaper to mid-range option that is not too floral.  This is important because we don't want the alcohol to overpower the flavors we are adding to it.  I used Beefeater Gin and Absolut Vodka for my infusions.
  • Simple Syrup: we will add simple syrup to our infusions at the beginning of the process.  This is important because it will help to keep the flavors balanced.  The simple syrup we will use is 1 part sugar to 2 parts water.  This is less sweet than a typical simple syrup which uses equal parts sugar to water.  The lower sugar content than normal will ensure the infusion does not come out too sweet.
  • Flavors: you can use whichever flavors you like to infuse your gin and vodka! Some great options include berries, herbs, lavender, or vanilla beans.  In these infusions have used raspberries for a sweet option, jalapenos to add some spice, and rosemary for its woodsy flavors.
  • Storing: when infusing your gin and vodka, you need to store them in airtight containers and in a dark place.  This is important because we do not want the alcohol to evaporate while we are waiting for the flavor infusion to happen.

Ingredients

For the Simple Syrup:

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water

For the Infusion:

  • 750 ml of either vodka or gin
  • 1 cup simple syrup
  • handful of flavoring of your choice

Instructions

For the Simple Syrup:

  1. Add sugar and water to a small saucepan and heat.
  2. Bring to a boil until all sugar has dissolved into the liquid and remove from heat.
  3. Let cool completely.

For the Infusions:

  1. Add alcohol, simple syrup, and flavorings to an airtight container and seal.  Shake the container to combine all of the ingredients.
  2. Store in a dark space for 5 to 7 days.  You may need more time if the flavorings have a milder taste.
  3. Check on the containers and give a shake every few days.
  4. Once the infusions are ready, pour the liquid into a bowl over a strainer.  This is important because you want to remove any of the flavorings that may impact the flavor over time.
  5. Store in an airtight container away from light for up 6 months.
